Research With Astronomy And Physics Faculty Members:

  • Chris De Pree studies star formation in the Milky Way and other galaxies, and has several active projects that are structured to involve student work. Interested students should have taken Astronomy 120 and 121, as well as Physics 110-111. Familiarity with computers is helpful, but not essential, as you will be able to learn the software needed to analyze the data. Most datasets are from the Very Large Array (VLA) in Socorro, NM. Projects typically take an academic year to complete, so if you are interested, please make contact early in the fall semester. Some current projects: (1) broad recombination line objects in the Galactic star forming region Sgr B2, (2) mid-IR Gemini observations of the most powerful water maser outflow in the galaxy, (3) VLA observations of hot ammonia in Galactic star forming regions. Student projects can involve data reduction (making images from raw data), or data analysis, depending on student interest.

  • Amy Sullivan does experimental research in optics, the study of light and the interaction of light with materials. We will be setting up a sophisticated imaging system using visible light to image micrometer-scale objects in large volume samples. These methods can be applied to engineering and materials applications such as characterization of manufactured systems and new materials as well as biological tissues for looking at live samples. Students interested in working on these topics should have taken Physics 110-111 in order to be able to get started. More advanced projects are available for upper level students who have taken courses in optics and electromagnetism. Student projects include involvement the design and implementation of the optical system as well as computer programming and data analysis. Smaller projects are available during the academic year as well as more in depth projects for students interested in working in the lab over the summer.
