Physics and Astronomy Major and Minor Requirements
       
 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR IN PHYSICS:

For the major in physics: Physics 110, 111, 210, 211, 242, 243, 311, 361 and 400, plus three additional 300-level courses selected from 321, 331, 341, and 352; Math 220

  • PHY 321 "Classical Mechanics"  (2009-2010 and alternating years)
  • PHY 331 "Thermal Physics"  (2010-2011 and alternating years)
  • PHY 341 "Electromagnetism"   (2010-2011 and alternating years)
  • PHY 352 “Optics”  (2009-2010 and alternating years)

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR IN ASTROPHYSICS:

For the major in astrophysics: Astronomy 120, 121, 121L, 300, 301, and 400; Physics 110, 111, 210, 211, and three additional 300-level physics courses; Math 220

Courses required in the discipline (in addition to physics courses listed above):

  • AST 120 "The Solar System"
  • AST 121 "Galaxies and Cosmology"
  • AST 121L "Observational Techniques"
  • AST 300 "Astrophysics I: Radiation"  (2009-2010 and alternating years)
  • AST 301 "Astrophysics II: Dynamics"  (2010-2011 and alternating years)
  • AST 400 "Advanced Seminar" (meets jointly with PHY 400)

Courses required outside of the discipline:

  • MATH 220 "Multivariable Calculus"

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR IN MATH-PHYSICS:

For the major in Math-Physics:  Math 118, 119, 206, 220, 309, and four additional credits at the 200-level or above; Physics 110, 111, 210, and 12 additional credits (normally 3 courses), 8 of which (normally two courses) must be at the 300-level or above.  Math-Physics majors are encouraged to take a senior seminar in Mathematics or in Physics, depending on their interests.


REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR IN PHYSICS:

Physics 110, 111, 210, 211 and eight additional credits as approved by the department.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR IN ASTROPHYSICS:

Astronomy 120, 121 and 121L, Physics 110, 11 and 210, and one additional astronomy or physics course as approved by the department.
